Completion at Andover Airfield for The Co-operative Group

Goodrich are delighted to announce the completion of a new distribution facility for one of Britain’s largest supermarket chains, Co-operative Group Ltd. Constructed on a former airfield in Andover, Co-op’s 470,000 sq ft composite unit has a unique barrel vaulting roof design in-keeping with the former original aircraft hangers. The unit was completed in April 2011; on time and on budget.

The project involved the development of a single storey warehouse with two and three storey integral office accommodation. The unit includes substantial fit out works and is subdivided into temperature controlled and ambient areas with on site vehicle maintenance facilities, landscaping and infrastructure road works. Improvements have also been made to the A303 providing access into the development, allowing this distribution centre to cover the whole of the South of England.

This development has played a big part in the re-shaping of Co-op’s distribution network to ensure they continue to provide a high standard of service to their customers.

Goodrich acted as Project Manager, Quantity Surveyor and CDM Co-ordinator for Co-op on this project and they have also been appointed on the design and construction of another new 430,000 sq ft distribution centre in Avonmouth, which is due to commence in August 2011. Avonmouth is the fifth distribution facility Goodrich have acted for Co-op on, other new facilities have been constructed at Thurrock, Birtley and Scotland. This distribution facility will be the fifth for Goodrich who have acted for Co-op on all of their new facilities. Others have been constructed at Thurrock, Birtley and Scotland.

Stephen Vickers, Associate at Goodrich, said “We are delighted with the Andover project and Co-op are a fantastic Client for us. We look forward to working with them on the next scheme at Avonmouth”.
