Often a requirement to demonstrate the level of Sustainability is a BREEAM rating. BREEAM is the world’s longest established and most widely used environmental assessment method for buildings. It sets the standards for best practice in sustainable development and a BREEAM-rated building will bring a variety of environmental, economic and social benefits.
BREEAM considers all aspects of a development, from CO2 emissions to the facilities for cyclists, and extends to areas such as the contractors' site management.
The aims of BREEAM are:
Achieving a BREEAM rating is not easy. Our service adds value to the assessment process by targeting the most effective means of achieving the required BREEAM score at an early stage, and then providing guidance to the design team towards that goal.
The anecdotal evidence suggests that achieving a BREEAM “Excellent” rating typically adds 10% to project costs, where the approach has been to “bolt-on” features as an afterthought. We have proven however that this figure can be decreased by 5-7% on projects which are well planned when we are appointed to provide early input on Sustainable and Breeam issues. By employing Goodrich Sustainability the project is automatically credited with 2 points towards the final BREEAM Rating by virtue of us being Accredited Professionals.
Goodrich’s involvement in the process can go far beyond that of merely carrying out the actual assessment. With many years of experience in the construction process and with sustainable buildings, we can bring support to the design process at a very early stage to ensure that the achievement of sustainability objectives and the award of that all-important BREEAM rating, are as integral to a project’s success as cost certainty and deliverability.
It is essential that environmental and sustainability issues are addressed in the design brief of any construction project and take as high a priority as such fundamentals as building regulations and health and safety requirements.
Goodrich have many years of experience working on BREEAM ’Very Good’ and ’Excellent’ rated buildings and of providing specialist advice on building projects where specific Sustainability issues need to be considered.
With a knowledge base coming from extensive Project, Cost Management and Mechanical and Electrical Engineering skills, we are in a unique position amongst Sustainability and BREEAM assessment organisations, in that we are able to apply a thoroughly practical and cost-effective outlook to our commissions while ensuring that the requirements are met.
